Epoxy resins in the aeronautics industry

Two features are essential in the construction of structures that want to take to the skies: low weight and resistance to corrosion.

To achieve the first characteristic, it is essential to use perfectly designed composite materials with low viscosity epoxy resins in the aeronautical field that allow highly compacted vacuum infusions or RTM processes (BEPOX® 2193 or BEPOX® 2182). If the process chosen is by prepregs, GAIRESA also has a patented system of epoxy resins with adjustable tack and curing times (GAIRECOM® 2006 LT SPORT).

Composites for the aeronautics industry

Corrosion resistance is an intrinsic property of composite materials and resins, but sometimes in the aeronautical industry it is necessary to use metals due to their special mechanical characteristics. This is when special anti-corrosion coatings are needed to protect metals, unquestionably extending their durability and improving their resistance to ageing.

GAIRESA‘s anticorrosive systems include chrome-free primers such as BEPOX® TP/Zn or GAIBRIDGE® 11, as well as high performance coatings with maximum resistance to ageing, such as the aliphatic polyurethanes GAIDUR® P (solvent-based) or GAIDUR® NANOCLEAR (100% solids), and a special coating based on 100% aliphatic epoxy resins, TRIEPOX® 2094.

Aeronautical Features
Viscosity (mPa-s, 20ºC) Pot-life (min) Tg (ºC) Tensile Strength (MPa) Elastic Modulus (MPa) Compressive Strength (MPa) Flexure Strength (MPa)
BEPOX 2193 250 212* 80 58,5 2600 85 112
BEPOX 2182 340 81* 77 62 2900 82 78
GAIRECOM 2006 LT SPORT 3377 prepreg 75 53 2120 131

Other special high-performance coatings include flame retardant coatings (BEPOX® 1643 IGNIFUGO, GAIDUR® P IGNIFUGO), coatings with properties (BEPOX® 1867 CONDUCTOR and GAIDUR® 54 CONDUCTOR), coatings with high chemical resistance to acids (BEPOX® 1355 RQ), coatings with maximum resistance to abrasion and friction (GAIKOL® 2286 R and GAIDUR® 2177), as well as their anti-slip versions..

Our LARBOND® range of structural adhesives, with epoxy, polyurethane and methacrylate-based systems, complements construction processes in the aeronautical industry by promoting effective and durable chemical bonds between all types of materials: metals, plastics, resins, etc.
